Thomas Walther

Thomas Walther is an Associate Professor of Finance with the Utrecht School of Economics, Utrecht University. Since 2025, he is the program director of the Master's in Banking and Finance.
Formerly, he was Assistant Professor for Energy Finance (Non-Tenure Track) at the Institute for Operations Research and Computational Finance, School of Finance, University of St. Gallen. He is also Research Fellow for Finance at the Faculty of Business and Economics, Technische Universität Dresden from which he received a B.Sc. (2010) and M.Sc. (2013) in Industrial Engineering and Management and a PhD (2017) in Business & Economics.
His research focuses on commodity/energy/climate finance and financial econometrics with applications to risk management. His articles are published in refereed journals such as Energy Economics, Energy Journal, International Journal of Forecasting, Journal of Economic Surveys, and Journal of Forecasting. In 2024, Thomas was ranked among the top scientists in business administration under 40 years in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and researchers who are born in these countries. Among other journals, Thomas serves as Associate Editor for Finance Research Letters.
He initiated the European Sustainable Finance PhD Workshop in 2023 in Utrecht. He is also co-founder of the Dutch Sustainable Finance Network which organizes an annual workshop since 2024.
